First 72 Hours at Home
- Create a calm landing zone Set up crate, water, and chew in a quiet corner. Limit visitors so your puppy can decompress.
- Short, frequent outings Potty breaks every 60–90 minutes while awake. Praise quietly outside; keep excitement low indoors.
- Handled meals Feed in the crate with the door open, occasionally hand-feed to pair people with good things.
- Sleep comes first Puppies need 16–18 hours of sleep. Protect nap times and avoid over-stimulation.
Feeding & Growth
Keep your German Shorthair Pointer lean to protect joints and heart health.
- 8–16 weeks: high-quality large-breed puppy kibble, 3–4 measured meals.
- 4–6 months: transition to 3 meals; monitor body condition weekly.
- 6+ months: 2 meals; add slow-feed bowl if your pup eats fast.
- Fresh water at all times; avoid forced running until growth plates close.
Treats: keep total treats under 10% of daily intake. Use part of each meal for training to avoid extra calories while reinforcing good behavior.
Training Foundations
Potty & crate
- Outside after naps, play, and meals. Calm praise when they finish.
- Crate equals rest: chews for quiet time, no punishment.
- Gradually stretch crate time with predictable nap/play cycles.
Leash & manners
- Clip leash during mealtime strolls around the house to normalize wearing it.
- Sit-to-say-please before doors, food bowls, and greetings.
- Redirect mouthing to a toy; reward four paws on the floor for calm greetings.
Grooming & Wellness Rhythm
- Weekly coat wipe-down and gentle brush to remove dander and check skin.
- Nail trims every 7–10 days; handle paws daily to keep it low-stress.
- Begin teeth brushing with puppy-safe toothpaste 3–4 times a week.
Movement: stick to age-appropriate walks, light hill work, and controlled play. Avoid high-impact jumping until at least 12–14 months to protect joints.
